The following two courses are designed for undergraduate students with career goals in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, veterinary medicine, biological and biomedical sciences, excercise science, nutrition,
research, and teaching.
The two courses are taught by three senior faculty members:
Michael Pierce, PhD, – Distinguished Research Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; Mudter Professor in Cancer Research Representative Topics: Basics of stem cell biology and cancer stem cells; molecular mechanisms that cause cancer; new types of cancer treatments.
William S. York, PhD, – Biochemistry & Molecular Biology - Professor
Representative Topics: Structural Biology of Complex Glycans; Polysaccharide Biosynthesis; Plant Cell Walls; Bioinformatics for Glycobiology
Shelley E. Zuraw, PhD. – Associate Professor of Art History, Lamar Dodd School of Art
Representative Topics: Roman and Florentine sculpture of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries; ancient and Renaissance portraiture; politics and patronage in the communes of the late medieval and early modern Italy.
This course will satisfy an Area IV Humanities core requirement.
BCMB 3433. Biology for Medicine. 4 credit hours.
Prerequisite: BIOL 1107 or
This course covers an array of current topics in biochemistry, genetics, molecular
and cellular biology, physiology, pathophysiology, and biotechnology, and consists of lectures
and discussion sections each day. Students will write short essays on selected topics.
ARHI2121. Introduction to Italian Art. 3 credits hours.
Students will learn how to appreciate, analyze, and think critically about original works of art in situations unlike the traditional art appreciation or art history classes. The emphasis will be on seeing and discussing actual works of art in their cultural settings, not reproductions through digital images. Each student will be given a specific work that they will prepare in advance in order to present to the class on site.
The basic cost of the 2015 Science Maymester program was $6,362, but airfare, some meals and personal expenses are not included in this cost. Final cost for 2016 Science Maymester program has not yet been determined. More information about Maymester Money Matters.
